“Wow, the rear wheels are spinning!” you whisper under your breath after seeing a normally front wheel drive van, roasting the rear wheels off after spooling up for what seems like forever on the sloppy transbrake. The 70mm CAT diesel dump truck turbo takes its sweet time spooling up to 3300 rpm, making 14 psi of boost while sitting there, not moving. Letting off the button, the turbo immediately spikes boost to 26 psi – On a bone stock 6 liter with 91 octane pump gas in it – probably due to a sticky China wastegate, and melts the tires off. good times!
The 6 liter, a retired plow truck LS engine is completely untouched. I didn’t put in any new parts, I didn’t gap the rings, the only thing I did was pulled the valve covers to see how much sludge was under them, and I didn’t even clean that out. Full send or no send.
I decapped stock truck fuel injectors and they came out to 70 LB/HR, and apparently they’re not big enough either because I saw 130% duty cycle on the log at full boost. In the stock caravan gas tank is a walbro 450 fuel pump that may or may not deliver enough fuel to the engine.
Do I care? Eh, not really.
The transmission responsible for delivering the power to the rear wheels and not throwing up all over the road is a 4L80E that I took out of an extended cargo van with over 290,000 kms on it and had a hard life as a heating and appliance service vehicle. Well, it thought it had a hard life until I got at it. It is completely unmodified front to back, I put in a new tailshaft seal and that’s literally it. I bought the biggest, cheapest transmission cooler I could find at carquest and ziptied it to the intercooler, and have an electric fan in front of it so that the fluid doesn’t boil up through the dipstick tube when I’m holding it on the transbrake for twenty five minuites at a time while I wait for that massive diesel turbo to spool.
In the rear is a ford 8.8 diff from the rustiest 2002 ford F-150 that I’ve ever seen in my life. I put in a set of 3.55 gears and a mini spool so both tires are locked and I’m not delivering 600 horsepower through only one tire, because lets face it, that’s plain dumb.
In saying that, I have absolutely no faith in that mini spool lasting very long because I absolutely terrorize the van every time I drive it, and parts tend to not last long like that.
Also, the van is obscenely long, and I have to do a 13 point turn to just go left.
No seriously, I’m surprised it didn’t scatter pistons and rods all over the highway too.
