Today on this 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan, we’re going to be taking a look at the MaxxTow 30×50 Wheelchair Carrier with a 48″ Long Ramp for 2″ Hitches, part number MT70106. We already have our carrier installed onto our vehicle, and this does have a 500-pound carrying capacity, and it has mesh flooring both here as well as the ramp, which is going to make it easy to clean. Also, we have these points on the front, back, and side, and that’s going to serve as a tie down point for either your ratchet straps or bungee cords when you’re putting your wheelchair, or your lawnmower, whatever it is you’re hauling. Once you’re ready to either unload or load up your wheelchair, you have to lower the ramp first. To do that, you have these pins right here that are holding the braces up to keep it in this position. To take them out, you just remove the pin first, then our clip here, like so. We’re actually going to lift it up to this point here, and secure it up here so it doesn’t just fly around, and reinsert our clip. We’ll do the same on the other side as well.

Now we can lower our ramp and you’re ready to load it up. Now, with the ramp all the way extended, measuring from the side of our vehicle here, we’ve added about 35″, or so, away from the vehicle once this is fully unloaded. Some other measurements I’d like to give you. Measuring from the edge of our bumper to our outer edge here, we’ve added about 40″ to the rear of the vehicle. For our ground clearance at the front, to this edge, that’s going to be about 12″. For our closest point to the bumper, that’s going to be about 10″ to this edge, and from the center of the hitch pin hole to that same location is going to be about 14″.

Just keep that in mind if you have a different style hitch installed on your vehicle that comes further out or goes further in. Once you have your wheelchair off, you can fold your ramp here either to this position here, or you can fold it completely flat. Go ahead and set it down, gripping it by this bar here welded on the back. We’ll also remove our pins and clips while we do this and then reattach them to these points here at the front. That’s just so the ramp stays in place as well. We’ll do this to the other side.

Also when it’s folded up in this position, as well as when the ramp is completely extended out, you do have full access to your rear hatch once the wheelchair’s not in there. Once you’re putting this in your garage for the evening or when you’re parking, to have more clearance in the rear this actually does fold up against the vehicle. First, we’ll remove the pin here and then we’ll push it all the way up against the vehicle. Once you get it to where you need it, re-lineup the holes, and insert the pin and clip. With it in it’s folded position, again measuring from the edge of the bumper, now we’ve only added about 9.5″ to the edge of the bumper, so that did make quite a bit of difference.
