Latest Dodge RAM – Loud CUMMINS REAR END NOISE – 94117 San Francisco CA 2018.
Loud CUMMINS REAR END NOISE. I’ve been experiencing a loud rear end noise while driving from the Cummins. The Cummins shocks are all good and dampen the bumps of the roadways well. I have bilstein 5100 series shocks for the truck and also a set of Gabriel Max control shocks. The bilstein 5100 series shocks ride pretty decent for the most part and I will go over why I got a different set of gabriel max control shocks for the Cummins in another video. I believe that the cummins clunk is probably coming from the rear leaf springs. The leaf springs on the truck are more than likely the original leaf springs that came on the cummins back in 2001. I doubt the leaf springs have ever been pulled off the cummins, let alone had new leaf springs installed. I’m not sure if re-arching the leaf springs would do the job and get rid of the clunk noise or not. It may be something as simple as replacing leaf spring bushings. The leaf springs bushings get worn out just like any other bushing (swat bar bushing, sway bar end link bushing, etc…). When the leaf spring bushings are worn out then they aren’t stiff enough to support weight of the 24 valve cummins through the leaf spring and when you carry weight on the cummins truck or hit bumps, the shocks will only dampen so much of that and the leaf springs are left to carry the load but can’t perform properly due to the bushings being worn out. That is where I believe my clunk is coming from. I’m also going to look at the u-bolts that hold the leaf springs to the dana 70 rear axle and check to see if those need replaced. One way or another, we will make this loud cummins rear end noise disappear!
