Today, on our 2015 Dodge Durango, we’re going to be doing a test fit of the Swagman Contour. This would be a roof-top mounted kayak carrier with a J-hook design, part no. S65148. As you can see, it does come with all the provided hardware to strap down your kayak. The 2 main body straps as well as the bow and stern lines. Let’s go ahead and start off by getting the bow and stern lines off and then we’ll get the main body straps off after that. It just going to simply be a nylon rope with a hook on one side.
The hook we just choose to hook that underneath the main body down below and on the front side in the engine compartment since there is no real place to mount it on the front side of the vehicle besides that point with it having the plastic bumpers and fascias. That hook ought to look just like so. Go ahead and undo the front and then we’ll go through the main body straps after that. You can see that nice little tie down point right here, on the side. It’s going to be the easiest point for you to do so. Go ahead and get our slack undone and get it off of the kayak.
Now you can tie these up, however you feel comfortable doing so, but always make sure that you have them tied down to a fixed mounting point. With that strap out of the way, let’s go ahead and close up our hood and then we’ll remove the main body straps. The main body straps, it’s always good to have a least one side coming underneath of your crossbars and not all of it connected to just the J-hooks. With these straps, you will have to attach it to the J-hooks at least one point, cause there isn’t quite enough strap to go underneath the crossbar on both sides. Go ahead and pull out the slack and just remove it from the vehicle. Now that we got the strap out of the way, let’s go ahead and pull the kayak off, pull it over toward you and tip it right out. Let’s talk about how the J-hooks are attached to our crossbars.
These will fit most all of roof rack systems, whether that be a round bar, square bar, elliptical bars, even your aero type bars or factory roof rails like you see here. It’s going to be a solid plate with 2 holes drilled in it to fit the bolts that are going to slide through and then 1 thumb screw on either side. Go ahead and loosen those up. We’re going to make it easy by only unthreading one side and leaving the other side just to where the threads come out the bottom. There is enough play in the bolts, that you will be able to swing it around, just like so.
Swing it around, fit the bolt through the hole, and then hold it up into place, and thread it down. Once you get this one to the same point as the other one, it’s always good to thread them down evenly after that. Then once you have those nice and secure you’ll be ready to hit the road with your all new Swagman Contour Roof-Top Mounted Kayak Carrier part no. S65148 on our 2015 Dodge Durango.
