Today, on our 2015 Dodge Durango, we’re going to be doing a test fit of the sport rack kayak carrier for the roof of your vehicle. It’s going to be the j-hook style design, and it’s going to come with all the provided hardware to strap down your kayak, as well as it’ll have your balance stern lines. It’s going to be part number SR5511. First off, let’s go ahead and undo our balance stern lines, that way you can kind of see where they go and how they function. Of course, you’re going to be able to tie them down however you see fit, but this’ll give you a good idea of how to do so. We just have it hooked to the receiver hitch, but you can also hook it to the spare tire underneath the backside or any other fixed mounting point. Moving to the front, the bumper and fenders are going to be mostly plastic, and you’re going to have this big fascia down here, so you’re not going to really have a point to fix and mount it down below – or off the front of the vehicle. We decided to do it inside the engine compartment. If you choose to do it this way, we’ll show you the spot where you can do so. Down here on the side, you’re going to have a hole – right on the inside of the fender. You can place your strap in there and your hook just like so, securing it down and coming back underneath to the hood.

Then undo our slack and pull it out of the way. Go ahead and close up the hood. Then we’ll go over the tie downs for the main body of your kayak. You’re going to have two. The best way to do it is going to be to go over the top, under the cross bar, back over and then under, making two full-shape U’s underneath of your cross bar. If you anchor it to your j-hook – if that we’re to ever come loose – your kayak would just come right off the top of the vehicle.

You don’t want that. Go ahead and pull the slack out and then undo it. You can see that this piece goes underneath, just like so, and hooks up. Undo them both and we’ll pull our kayak off. The best way to do it is to tilt out and place it on. When you put it up, you have it upside down, set it into place and then roll it back to where it makes three points of contact on the front, on the bottom, and on the back. Once you have it there, it’s super easy to place it on and off.

Now let’s go over how the j-hook is secured to our factory crossbars. These will most all of your crossbar systems, whether they be your ellipticals, arrow bar, your square bar or round bar, even your factory roof rack systems. You’re going to have two thumb screws and a metal plate. We’ll loosen those thumb screws up and spin that plate around. All right. You have the two thumb screws.
