A 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air was crash tested on September 9, 2009 into a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. The Bel Air was traveling at 64.3 km/h with a 44 percent overlap on the driver side, and the Malibu was traveling at 64.5 km/h with a 51 percent overlap on the driver side.
A Hybrid III 50th percentile male dummy was positioned in the driver seat. The vehicle was not equipped with seat belts.
Modifications to the Offset Barrier Crash Test Protocol included:
• Installation of two onboard cameras, mounts, and power supply (resulting in a test weight exceeding the maximum specified in the protocol by 25 kg); and
• The fuel tank was removed prior to testing; and
• A targeted 44 percent overlap with its crash partner that was
equivalent to a 50 percent overlap on the newer car.
•The UMTRI ATD Positioning Procedure was modified somewhat because the seatback in this vehicle is fixed.
Measures of intrusion taken after the crash indicated the lower instrument panel in front of the dummy moved rearward 27-32 cm. Resultant intrusion in the driver footwell measured 62 cm in
the area where a footrest typically would be located and 31-55 cm at other places on the toepan. The driver door opened during the crash but all other doors remained closed and then
opened with ease after the test. The driver door aperture shortened 26 cm, as measured at the lower edge of the window. The windshield became completely dislodged from the car. Deformation of the floor under the bench seat caused the left seat track to tear from its mountings.
The driver dummy was unrestrained (this vehicle is equipped with neither seat belts nor airbags). The dummy’s head loaded the steering wheel rim and hub; then, the head moved leftward and
loaded the instrument panel and leftmost gauge. The top of the head contacted the headliner during the crash and slid rearward along it through much of rebound. After the crash, the upper end of the steering column had moved upward 23 cm and rearward 31 cm.
HIC – Head Injury Criteria

HIC (Malibu): 430
