Dodge Caliber Dimensions Applies to 1996-2000 models

A 1998 Toyota RAV4 was crash tested on May 22, 1998 into a fixed deformable barrier at
40.1 mi/h (64.6 km/h) and a 41 percent overlap on the driver side. A Hybrid III 50th percentile
male dummy was positioned in the driver seat with the lap/shoulder belt fastened.
Measures of intrusion taken after the crash indicated the lower instrument panel in front of the
dummy moved rearward 2-4 cm. Resultant intrusion in the driver footwell measured 14 cm at
the footrest and 18-26 cm at other places on the toepan. All doors remained closed during the
crash and opened with ease after the crash.
The driver dummy was restrained by a three-point lap/shoulder belt and an airbag. During the
crash, the belt pretensioner activated and retracted 2 cm of shoulder belt webbing. A net amount
of 5 cm of webbing (or a total of 7 cm including the pretensioned length) spooled off the
retractor. As the dummy’s head loaded the airbag, it tilted to the left. During rebound, the back
of the head contacted the B-pillar and shoulder belt upper anchorage D-ring. After the crash, the
upper end of the steering column had moved upward 11 cm and rearward 4 cm.
The dummy’s head had a maximum resultant head acceleration of 80 g when it contacted the
B-pillar and shoulder belt D-ring. The chest sustained a resultant spine acceleration of 60 g for
3 ms when it loaded the airbag and seat belt. The left lower tibia index was 1.48, and the right
tibia index was 0.88. The right medial knee skin was caught, stretched, and punctured by a sharp
corner of a steel flange on the underside of the steering column.
The A-P bending moment, the primary contributor to the right upper tibia index in this crash test,
appeared to have been caused by forces acting on the dummy’s foot that created a bending
moment at the load cell because the dummy’s tibia is not straight. Consequently, the recorded
right upper tibia index likely overstates the risk of tibia injury due to bending.
