Dodge Viper Upside Down This video tries to address a common problem: How to reuse a banjo fitting after it has been loosened.
Many people tend to reuse everything without minimum clean up and this often results in leaky joints.
Here’s the step we followed:
00:04 Step 1: Cleaning the banjo with a clean towelrag and some solvent
00:22 Step 2: Cleaning the bolt (same as above. Not shown: soak it in solvent and blow it dry.)
00:39 Step 3: Installing everything in the correct order
00:59 Step 4: Tightening the bolt to spec (use a torque wrench, especially if it’s the first time and a delicate part!)
01:20 Job done!

A word of advice: copper o aluminium washers (their use varies depending on the material of both the bolt and banjo) are annealed. This means that they have been heat treated to be more ductile and better seal the mating surfaces. Reusing them is a bad idea, even if some folks have the bad habit of simply sanding them flat. Given their cost it should be a no brainer to simply replace them.
We also didn’t clean the timing adjuster’s surface because it was a new part and already fitted to the engine. If you have to do it make sure to close the hole with a bolt before shooting dust and grime down your engine, brake caliper, whatever’s throat 🙂
The same applies to the drilled bolts themselves: thoroughly wash and blow them with your compressor’s mighty air nozzle before reusing them.
One last word: Torque the bolt to spec! We did it so many times that it was unnecessary but still, do it. It’s easy to damage banjo fittings by overtightening them just as much as it is to undertigthen them and enjoy a bunch of unnecessary leaks 🙂
