2018 Dodge Charger Fuel Economy Review

Fuel Economy
The Charger is a big, heavy car with a healthy appetite for fuel. Although it has below-average EPA estimates in the city, it has fairly competitive highway ratings. We haven’t tested the V-6 version or the 485-hp V-8 on our highway fuel-economy loop, but the intermediate, V-8 engine exceeded its 25-mpg estimate by 1 mpg.

The EPA rates the rear-wheel-drive Charger V-6 at 19 mpg city and 30 mpg highway, which betters the all-wheel-drive model by 1 and 3 mpg, respectively. The burlier V-8 Chargers have nearly identical EPA estimates to one another—both V-8s earn 25 mpg on the highway while the 5.7-liter gets a 1-mpg bump in the city versus the 6.4.

We’ve devised our own fuel-economy test in an attempt to replicate how most people drive on the highway. Our procedure entails a 200-mile out-and-back loop on Michigan’s I-94 highway. We maintain a GPS-verified 75 mph and use the cruise control as much as possible to mimic the way many drivers behave during long trips.

So far, we only have real-world fuel-economy data for the Charger’s 5.7-liter V-8, which earned 26 mpg on our highway fuel loop—3 mpg better than its most similar rival, the Chevrolet SS.
